Tomb of Tu Duc is often called Khiem Lang. This is one of the historic monuments belonging to Hue ancient vestige complex. It was recognized by UNESCO as a world cultural heritage on December 11, 1993. Tu Duc Tomb is the burial ground of the 4th emperor of the Nguyen Dynasty. That is King Tu Duc or Nguyen Phuc Hong Nham. He ruled for 36 years from 1847 to 1883. Besides, he was also one of the kings to hold the longest throne in the Nguyen Dynasty.

According to historical records, in the Nguyen Dynasty, the rule of feudalism, the first son of King Thieu Tri was Hong Bao who was the successor. However, due to poor talent and intelligence, arrogant temperament, the king was removed from Tiem throne. And Hong Nham was the second son of the king to the throne and called himself Tu Duc.

But after the Chay Voi uprising, King Tu Duc changed the name to Khiem Cung. Finally, after the king’s death, they called it Khiem Lang.

Tu Duc Tomb is an ancient architectural complex located in a narrow valley in Duong Xuan village. But now it is in Thuong Ba hamlet, Thuy Xuan ward, Hue city.

In the 19th year of Tu Duc (1866), due to the extreme misery of the construction of Van Nien Co, a force of soldiers and civilians who built the tomb rebelled. Although the uprising was suppressed, due to this incident, the king had to change Van Nien Co’s name to Khiem Cung and write a sympathetic speech to apologize.

Coming to Hue, any tourist remembers the vast and ancient tombs. One of the most attractive tombs is Minh Mang Tomb. This is a project bearing the imprint of traditional architecture of the country.

1. The history of the Tomb of Minh Mang

Every Nguyen Dynasty king nurtured his tomb. King Minh Mang is no exception. After a period of searching, in the summer of 1840, Minh Mang tomb was started construction. Until 1843, after two years Minh Mang died, the tomb was completed. Currently, the Tomb of King Minh Mang is located in Cam Ke Mountain, Huong Tho Commune, Huong Tra District, Hue. Besides, it is near the Bang Lang T-junction, where the Ta Trach and Huu Trach intersection form the Huong River running through the citadel Hue City. The mausoleum is about 12 km from Hue city.

As the main gate of the mausoleum, there are 3 paths with 24 nice roofs. The gate is only open once to bring the king’s coffin in. to go through the two side paths, Ta Hong Mon and Huu Hong Mon. The gate is painted in red, symbolizing the life and longevity of the Nguyen Dynasty.

b. Bi Dinh

Located in the middle of Tan Nguyet Lake in the shape of a new moon, crossing the Smart Chinh Truc Bridge, the king’s resting place in the middle of a hill named Khai Trach Son is limited by the Buu Thanh circle. Emperor Minh Mang’s casket was brought here by a tunnel through three stone gates. It is then permanently closed. Every year, this bronze door was opened only once on the occasion of the New Year to clear the grave.
