Everything in the dictionary and more - all on one great CD-ROM!
The CD-ROM gives lots of extra help with reading, writing, listening and speaking.
-Pronunciation by native speakers
For every word in the dictionary you can click on the 'speaker' symbol and hear the word pronounced by a native speaker. The red speaker gives you the word in British English. The blue one gives you it in American English.
If you click on the 'microphone' symbol you can record your own pronunciation of the word and can compare it with the native speakers. It's just like having your teacher in the computer!
If you click on the SMART thesaurus button at any word in the dictionary, it will automatically show you all the words with a similar meaning.
To give you an idea of what it is like, think of the sentence "My sister is very pretty". What other words can you think of that mean the same as pretty in this sentence?
This is what you see in the SMART thesaurus if you click on the button at the word tree. The list on the left shows you all the phrases with this meaning. There are a lot more than the ones you can see on this screen. There are about 50 words on this list which are all connected in some way with tree.
The middle screen shows you what each word means. The screen on the right shows you other groups of words that you might want to see. In this way you can start with a small number of words and then explore all of the English language!
You can use the 'Advanced Search' button to search for particular areas of language. For instance, you can search for idioms only, or phrasal verbs only, or by topic area. The screen shows idioms which contain the word story.
QUICKfind works like magic to find words when you are on the Internet or reading on a computer. You just have to point at a word with your mouse and the definition will appear in the QUICKfind window in the corner of your screen.
If you are writing on-screen, SUPERwrite helps you to write better English.
It gives you useful information about grammar, collocation and common errors at the click of a mouse. This screen shows you what happens when you click on the word advice while writing in a word-processing document.
The CD-ROM contains many different types of exercise which can be done on screen or printed out for use in the classroom. There are 7 types of word exercises, containing hundreds of randomly generated sentences, which focus on grammar and usage, and 36 picture exercises which are very useful for vocabulary building and practice.

The Oxford Picture Dictionary Interactive CD-ROM
The Oxford Picture Dictionary is an extremely useful tool for all beginning students of English. Its colorful pictures and scenes can help anyone learn English, and is perfect as an ESL reference for classroom or home study. It can be used alone as a self-study tool or with a certified ESL instructor.
When students begin to learn a new language there is a crucial need to develop a basic core vocabulary. Without this basic vocabulary, even day-to-day survival is very difficult. The Oxford Picture Dictionary is perhaps the best means to bring a student this core vocabulary. Thousands of everyday words and corresponding scenes and pictures are included in this book. If you are teaching in an ESL situation, this book will save you many hours of fumbling around trying to explain vocabulary to students who can't understand you.
The Oxford Picture Dictionary is a comprehensive reference to everyday vocabulary. It contains 3,600 words divided into 12 broad and thematically-grouped units that are further subdivided into 140 subject topics. The 12 topic areas in the dictionary include Everyday Language, People, Housing, Food, Clothing, Health, Community, Transportation, Areas of Study, Plants and Animals, Work, and Recreation.
Features of the Oxford Picture Dictionary
The dictionary provides 168 pages of dynamic, detailed color scenes and individual illustrations clearly depicting over 3,600 words.
Twelve thematically-grouped units cover vocabulary which students can use at home, in the workplace, in the community, and in their academic studies.
140 key topics correspond to the curriculum of beginning and intermediate level coursework.
Exercises, related vocabulary, and grammar points are all included on the page.
Numerous verbs and adjectives are presented in phrases which provide additional contexts for vocabulary and demonstrate realistic language.
There is a complete index with a Pronunciation Guide, Geographical Index, and Verb Guide.
Eleven bilingual editions are also available, with more planned for the future.
The New Oxford Picture Dictionary CD-ROM
The CD-ROM version of The New Oxford Picture Dictionary adds sound, animation and interactive exercises to the illustrations from the printed book. There is quick access to over 2,400 words in spoken and written form, with 13 themes (e.g. Housing), each divided into topics (e.g. The Baby's Room, Housework and Repair Verbs). Fully interactive topic pages allow students to click on any of the objects in the picture to access the spoken and written form of the word. Interactive exercises and activities help students to increase their wordpower and improve their comprehension skills. And tests and games which involve the linking of picture and word, picture and sound, and sound and word, are available.
The vocabulary is put into context in the short texts and dialogues of the 'Read, Listen and Speak' activities. Students can take part in the dialogues, record their own voice and compare it with the original. It is available in two versions: monolingual and English-Spanish.
